Pharmacology

mechanism of action:

Ceftazidime has bactericidal action which means it directly kills the bacteria instead of preventing their growth .it works by inhibiting the enzyme primarily penicillin binding protein 3 and by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis and inhibiting cross-linking of the peptidoglycan and thus kills the bacteria so there is no cell replication .ceftazimide active against both gram-negative and gram- positive bacteria .

Pharmacokinetics:

Protein Binding: only less then 10% is protein bound
Distribution: Distributed widely into the body tissues and fluids, including the gallbladder, liver, kidneys, bone, sputum, bile, and pleural and synovial fluids . ceftazidime is penetrated in the cerebospinal fliud and it crosses through the placental barrier.

severe stomach ache, bloody and watery stools

confusion, difficulty in speech or memory

seizure or fits

a cold feeling, discoloration of the skin .

pain, swelling, burning sensation , or irritation in the area around the site of injection.

stomach pain or nausea, vomiting

vaginal itching or discharge.

Contraindication

It is contraindicated to be used by the patients with known hypersensitivity .

Pregnancy and breast feeding: it is safe to use ceftazidime during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Caution

It is a prescribed with caution to the people suffering with gastrointestinal disorders mainly colitis.
